How to Make Prawn Soup (Tom Yum Goong) & Veggie Soup Thai Style

In the Thai-style dishes section we selected the best Thai recipes we could find. We attended a cookery school in Koh Phangan to try for ourselves to recreate the most authentic dishes this country is famous for. Anyway all the food we tried in Thailand was really delicious and amazing in a different way.

 Hot and sour prawn soup Thai style or Tom Yum Goong

Serves 1-2

1/2 cup medium sized prawns , peeled and deveined
1 straw mushrooms or any type of mushroom, cut into quarters
1 lemongrass, cut into pieces
1 kaffir lime leaves, torn in half
10 galangel ginger, sliced
1/2 tablespoon fish sauce
1/4 tablespoon lime juice
1 cup water or chicken stock
1/2 tomato, cut into quarters
1 tablespoon fresh coriander leaves, chopped
1 tablespoon green onions, chopped
1/2 tablespoon Thai chillies paste
2 tablespoons coconut milk
3 bird’s eye chillies


Put together the lemongrass, galangal ginger, kaffir lime leaves, mushrooms, chillies and tomato into water and bring to boil. Cook until tender. Add the prawns and cook until tender. Add coconut milk, lime juice, fish sauce and Thai chilli paste. Serve hot and garnish with fresh coriander and green onions.

How to make vegetable soup Thai style (Kang Liang Pak Ruam)

Ingredients for spiced spice mixture:

2 tablespoons of ground shrimp or fish paste
5 black pepper corns
5 shallots

Other ingredients:

10 prawns, shelled
baby corn, pumpkin and cucumber, cut into quarters
1 cup lime basil
2 cups chicken stock or water
1 tablespoon fish sauce or soy sauce


Place spice mixture ingredients in a mortar and pound until mixed throughly.Heat water or chicken stock in a pot to boiling and add spice mixture, stirring.Add the vegetables and prawns. When vegetables are done, season to taste with fish sauce or soy sauce as desired then remove from the heat and serve.
