Malacca History.
Malacca is probably one of the interesting places we’ve end up to; it has great historical and cultural background from the previous Portuguese, Dutch and British rule, that the city was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2008. It is the place where it all begins; when prince Parameswara first found Melaka in the 14th century.He built a city on the spot he used to rest, under a tree by the river. He was driven out of Palembang by the Japanese enemy and escaped in today’s Singapore. An invasion kicked him out of there too, so he and his small band moved to the west coast of the Malay Peninsula. After moving a couple of times on the hot summer he sat down under a tree by the river Bertam. It was then when he built the today’s city of Melaka, and he gave its name after the tree he sat under.

The geographic position was great for maritime trade; with the straights that lead China to India and the Near East, it grew rapidly to a wealthy city with a population of 50.000. It became a worldwide trading center through the years, till the Europeans laid eyes on it. The Portuguese first took the city, then the Dutch and finally the British army. So from 1826 the English East India Company in Calcutta ruled the city until the Japanese didn’t concur them.

 Independency of Melaka arrived in 1957.

 There are numerous remains of Melaka heritage, with various remains from the Dutch, Portuguese, British and Chinese rule, like A Famosa, a fortress built by the Portuguese when attacked by the Dutch invasion; St. Francis Xavier Church, built by a Frenchmen, The Stadhuys, built in 1060 as the official residence of Dutch Governors and their officers; Malacca’s Sultanate palace; St. John’s Fort; Jonker Street, Bukit China and many more, representing the history of this beautiful…
