Cremation ceremony Ubud Bali, an invitation you can’t refuse

When we were coming back from the Royal home, Aji was telling us a story about his cousin, who died recently. He used to be a very important military man, and had many followers. His cremation ceremony was in preparation. He took us to a house where ten man were preparing a spacial balinese curry powder, and one was chopping the chillies, other was peeling the garlic, and other was dealing with the spices. There was going to be a massive ceremony as three man was going to get burned and have their ashes pray to. The ceremony was about to take place near our house, Aji’s house.

We weren’t really much informed of such a ceremony before, so slowly we could have spotted the many details of the preparation. Aji’s cousin was in his bed for 16 or so days before the ceremony. The whole village of Ubud was going. Aji once said that babies cry when they are born because they are coming to the earth, and the dying is the only thing that connects the spirit with the free floating universe and it breaks the chains of the body and release it from this temporary vessel called life on earth. Thats the reason why men are celebrating death as a good thing, and by giving a fire to the dead body it’s the only way to reconnect the soul with the main four elements, earth, fire, water and wind.

There were preparations for three different ceremonies in the same place. Aji’s cousin was the wealthiest of all, and the most influential man, so his ceremony was the most expensive one, and that was the most spectacular thing we have ever seen in our lives. Priests were taking places and singing to the body, saying prays for the spirit to be taken to the upperworld, protecting it to be reborn on the earth again. The ceremony doesn’t starts before the sun goes into the zenith, but many woman and man traditionally dresses were taking their places and slowly putting on the fire. The woman were praying for the spirit of the dead, while you can spot little children wandering around.

In the following years if the families have enough funds they do make more ceremonies for the same death relatives, just to speed up the process of the spirit’s enter to the upperworld, and to ensure that the cycle of the rebirth in the inspirited world is broken.
